UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta is taking bold steps to integrate intellectual property (IP) into its academic ecosystem by launching a Sentra HKI (Intellectual Property Center) and signing a cooperation agreement with the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI) under Indonesia’s Ministry of Law and Human Rights.
The initiative was marked by a public lecture held on July 2, 2025, featuring DJKI Director General Ir. Razilu, who spoke on strategies to transform university research into patented innovations.
Rector Prof. Noorhaidi Hasan emphasized the strategic value of IP protection, calling it essential in today’s knowledge economy.
“This center reflects a renewed commitment to collaboration among academia, government, and society in securing and utilizing original works,” he stated.
Razilu described universities as “factories of intellectual property,” urging scholars to see patents not as formality, but as tools for national progress. He outlined key criteria for patentable work: novelty, inventive step, and industrial applicability.
Dr. Abdul Qoyum, Chair of UIN’s Research and Community Service Institute (LPPM), affirmed that the university will support faculty and students in registering their IP. Meanwhile, Dr. Nita Handayani highlighted that Sentra HKI will provide hands-on legal and technical assistance.
This partnership positions UIN Sunan Kalijaga as a stronger player in the national innovation landscape, with a focus on ethical, impactful research and its real-world application.
