Bullying Out, Respect In: Inside UIN Sunan Kalijaga’s Transformative Orientation

Yogyakarta — UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta is taking a bold stand against bullying in its upcoming Pengenalan Budaya Akademik dan Kemahasiswaan (PBAK) from August 20–22, 2025. The university emphasizes a humanistic, creative, and friendly approach to welcoming new students, replacing outdated traditions of hazing with respectful, engaging activities.

At the PBAK Apel Siaga (readiness ceremony), Vice Rector for Student Affairs and Cooperation, Dr. Abdur Rozaki, introduced this year’s guiding concept: Mindful Learning — an approach grounded in awareness, social sensitivity, creativity, and openness to new perspectives. With the theme “Mindful Learning: Nurturing Intelligence, Kalijaga Youth in Synergy,” Rozaki called on freshmen to sharpen their intellect, collaborate across diversity, and grow as one academic family.

He outlined three principles for the organizing committee: reject bullying and violence, embrace creativity in introducing academic culture, and prioritize a humanistic and friendly approach. “Displaying a stern face is no longer relevant. New students deserve to be greeted with smiles, greetings, and respect for their achievement in passing a highly competitive selection process. Bullying, harassment, and hazing are relics of a bygone, uncivilized era,” he said.

Rozaki also stressed the importance of preventing sexual harassment and maintaining respectful interactions, especially toward female students. “This is not just academic ethics; it is an Islamic teaching that guides our conduct. At UIN Sunan Kalijaga, women’s dignity and honor are held in the highest regard,” he affirmed.

To ensure PBAK runs according to its anti-bullying vision, the committee has prepared a grievance post and provided Training of Trainers for facilitators, including creative engagement methods like ice-breaking sessions.

This year’s PBAK marks another step in UIN Sunan Kalijaga’s commitment to fostering an inclusive, respectful, and inspiring academic environment — one where every new student feels valued from day one.
